How to wear disposable gloves?

Wearing medical disposable gloves can reduce the risk of cross-contamination between patients and healthcare workers, and how to properly use disposable gloves is a prerequisite for reducing contact with harmful elements and ensuring glove integrity. The following is a description of how to wear disposable gloves.

Here is the content list:

  • Wear dry gloves method

  • Wearing wet gloves method

  • Wearing double gloves

  • Changing gloves

  • Duration of glove wear

  • Glove removal

Wear dry gloves method

Dip both hands in a little talcum powder (or medical starch) to facilitate the wearing of disposable gloves, hold the right hand inside the glove reflex, take out a pair of dry gloves, put the left hand into the left glove first, after wearing gloves, put the left hand into the right-hand reflex outside the circle, then put the right hand into the glove (the right glove can be worn first). Pull the reflex part of the glove to the top of the cuff without exposing the wrist. Before wearing disposable gloves, hands should not touch the outside of the gloves, and after wearing gloves, they should not touch the skin, and later use sterile saline to rinse the talcum powder from the gloves before operation.

Wear wet gloves method

After hand disinfection, while wet wear disposable gloves, take a pair of wet gloves from the basin holding gloves, hold water in the gloves, left hand into the disposable gloves, slightly raise the left hand, let the water flow out along the wrist to wear, then the left hand into the reflex part of the outer circle to wear the right glove, lift the right hand, so that the water flows out along the wrist (first wear the right glove can also be), put on the surgical gown, the glove reflex part to the cuff, do not show the wrist, the conditional hospital is generally not suitable for this method.

Wearing double gloves

Wearing a double layer of disposable gloves can reduce the exposure of the wearer to hazards. If a double layer of gloves is needed for a specific operation (e.g., chemotherapy, bone marrow aspiration) a loose glove is needed so that one can be placed on top of the other.

Changing gloves

After contact with a suspected contaminated area or item from the same patient, gloves should be changed before mucous membranes are to be touched. Medical disposable gloves should be removed before contact with non-contaminants or before other patients need to be disposed of, and hands should be washed immediately or with a disinfectant solution to avoid spreading microorganisms to other patients or items.

Duration of glove wear

The longer disposable gloves are worn, the more likely the protective barrier will be compromised. Using disposable gloves under adverse conditions or being exposed to multiple chemicals can lead to glove fatigue, so gloves should be changed appropriately during the procedure. During the procedure, if the gloves are broken or suspected of being contaminated should be replaced immediately.

Glove removal

It is important to remove gloves properly during use when sources of infection can contaminate the outer surface of surgical disposable gloves. When taking off hospital disposable gloves you should not forcefully pull, you should turn the gloves over and gently take them off, try not to touch the outside of the disposable gloves with your hands, the gloves taken off should be disinfected promptly and should not be thrown into the waste bin. Wrongly taking off disposable gloves will probably lead to the spread of contaminants outside the gloves, at which point the good barrier function will seem meaningless.
